Understanding School Refusal vs. Truancy
By Dr. Carol Schultz | 🕑 5 min read
When a child isn't attending school, adults often jump to conclusions. Teachers, administrators, and even well-meaning family members may label the behaviour as “truancy” or assume the child is simply being defiant.
But there's a critical difference between school refusal and truancy — and understanding this distinction can mean the difference between helping a child heal and deepening their trauma.
The Critical Difference: Can't vs. Won't
Truancy
WON'T go to school (behavioural choice)
- Secretive — hides absence from parents
- Low anxiety about missing school
- Often out with friends
- Linked to conduct issues or peer influence
School Refusal
CAN'T go to school (nervous system response)
- Transparent — parents fully aware
- High anxiety and physical distress
- Stays home, often in their room
- Linked to anxiety, trauma, or neurodevelopmental differences
Why This Distinction Matters
Using truancy interventions for school refusal makes things worse. Punishment, threats, and forced attendance can deepen trauma and increase anxiety.
Misidentifying school refusal as truancy can delay appropriate mental health treatment, increase shame and self-blame, damage the parent-child relationship, escalate anxiety and avoidance, and lead to more serious mental health crises.
How to Tell the Difference
| Question | Truancy | School Refusal |
|---|---|---|
| Does your child hide their absence? | Yes | No |
| Physical symptoms before school? | Rarely | Often |
| Signs of anxiety or panic about school? | No | Yes |
| Where is your child when not at school? | Out with friends | At home |
| Is the absence causing your child distress? | No | Yes |
What Schools Often Get Wrong
- Treating all non-attendance as a behavioural issue
- Implementing punitive consequences for school refusal
- Advising parents to “make home less comfortable than school”
- Refusing to provide work or support for absent students
- Threatening legal action without considering mental health factors
Your child deserves to be understood, not punished.
